Why 500,000 COVID-19 Deaths May Not Feel Any Different
Why is it so hard to feel the difference between 400,000 and 500,000 COVID-19 deaths—and how might that impact our decision making during the pandemic? Psychologist Paul Slovic explains the concept of psychic numbing and how humans can often use emotion, rather than statistics to make decisions about risk. Email the show at shortwave@npr.org.

Khatchig Mouradian, “The Resistance Network: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarianism in Ottoman Syria, 1915-1918” (MSU Press, 2020)
The Resistance Network: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarianism in Ottoman Syria, 1915-1918 (Michigan State University Press, 2020) is the history of an underground network of humanitarians, missionaries, and diplomats in Ottoman Syria who helped save the lives of thousands during the Armenian Genocide. Khatchig Mouradian challenges depictions of Armenians as passive victims of violence and subjects of humanitarianism, demonstrating the key role they played in organizing a humanitarian resistance against the destruction of their people. Piecing together hundreds of accounts, official documents, and missionary records, Mouradian presents a social history of genocide and resistance in wartime Aleppo and a network of transit and concentration camps stretching from Bab to Ras ul-Ain and Der Zor. He ultimately argues that, despite the violent and systematic mechanisms of control and destruction in the cities, concentration camps, and massacre sites in this region, the genocide of the Armenians did not progress unhindered—unarmed resistance proved an important factor in saving countless lives. Khatchig Mouradian is a lecturer in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies (MESAAS) atColumbia University. Mouradian has published articles on concentration camps, unarmed resistance, the aftermath of mass violence, midwifery in the Middle East, and approaches to teaching history. He is the co-editor of a forthcoming book on late-Ottoman history, and the editor of the peer-reviewed journalThe Armenian Review. Mouradian has taught courses on imperialism, mass violence, urban space and conflict in the Middle East, the aftermaths of war and mass violence, and human rights atWorcester State UniversityandClark Universityin Massachusetts, Rutgers University andStockton Universityin New Jersey, and California State University – Fresno in California. In January 2021, Mouradian was appointed Armenian and Georgian Area Specialist in the African and Middle Eastern Division (Near East Section) at the Library of Congress. Senate Leaders Lay Out Rules For Impeachment Trial Proceedings
On the eve of former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, senate leaders have set out rules for the proceedings. Schumer says that each side will get 16 hours, over two days, to present their arguments in Trump’s trial. According to Schumer, the GOP is searching for a way to “oppose the conviction of Donald Trump without passing judgment on his conduct.” Schumer also says that House managers have requested that the senate can hold votes on witnesses if needed.  Rep. Cheney defends her impeachment vote after the censure by Wyoming GOP and says that her “duty is to the constitution.”   White House officials say that Intel officials will decide if Trump can get Intel briefings if he requests them.  White House officials says to not expect Trump’s trial to be the “primary focus” for President Joe Biden, as this is a critical week for Biden’s $1.9 trillion covid relief package. Democratic lawmakers are now drawing up the bill. Sen. Bernie Sanders says that a $15 minimum wage should be in the relief package, after Biden has said that it’s unlikely to survive in the package.  Wolf Blitzer has a one-on-one interview with the United States Secretary of State Blinken.  To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

Amanda Petrusich Talks with the Weather Station’s Tamara Lindeman
Amanda Petrusich describes herself as a “diehard fan” of folk music, but not when it feels precious or sentimental. That’s why she loves the Weather Station, whose songs, she thinks, “could take a punch to the face.” A solo project of the songwriter and performer Tamara Lindeman, the Weather Station’s new album, “Ignorance,” focusses on the theme of climate grief: Lindeman was responding to a devastating report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change about the consequences of elevated carbon levels for human societies. If that sounds heady, Lindeman tells Petrusich that it may be her heritage. “There’s this thread in Canadian music of philosophical songwriting, and that’s how I like my lyrics to be. I like them to be about ideas as well as stories. . . . Most people want songs that just tell a story; they don’t want the complicated ideas. But I do.” The Weather Station performs “Robber” and “Tried to Tell You,” with Evan Cartwright on percussion and Karen Ng on saxophone.

*) US Senate leaders announce rules for impeachment trial US Senate leaders from both parties have agreed on the rules for former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial on Tuesday. The trial will begin with a debate and vote on whether it’s even constitutional to prosecute the former president and opening arguments would begin on Wednesday. Senate Democrats say Trump incited his supporters to riot at the US Capitol on January the sixth as lawmakers were certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 election win. Trump’s lawyers have called the entire procedure unconstitutional…because Trump is no longer president. *) Myanmar protesters vow to disobey ban on gatherings In Myanmar, protests are showing no sign of ending, despite curfews and bans on big gatherings. The civil disobedience call affects hospitals, schools and government offices across the Southeast Asian country as the movement continues to grow for the fourth day in a row. Myanmar’s military leader says the coup against Aung San Suu Kyi’s government was justified as her victory in the November poll was unfair. *) Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai remains in prison Hong Kong’s top court has extended media tycoon and Beijing critic Jimmy Lai’s stay in prison. Lai has been in custody since December the third, except for a week when he was granted bail. Now, the court has ruled that his release on bail last year was based on a misinterpretation of national security rules. *) Teams search for survivors of Himalayan glacier collapse in India In India, search and rescue teams are looking for survivors after part of a glacier collapsed in the northern state of Uttarakhand on Sunday. The incident triggered flash floods and landslides that killed at least 26 people. Another 170 are still missing. Rescue efforts are focused on several sites, including a tunnel where dozens of hydropower plant workers are reportedly trapped. And finally… *) Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes agree on a one-year contract Lewis Hamilton has signed a one-year deal with Mercedes for the 2021 season but the Formula One team’s boss indicated it could be his final season in the car. The agreement ends the British driver’s long-running contract saga with the dominant Silver Arrows ahead of the start of the new campaign in Bahrain. Hamilton has won more races, pole positions and podiums than any other driver in the sport’s history.
